From the Pastor's Study...

Written by Rev. Denise Cordova, Pastor
Light of the Soul United Church of Christ

SquooshyDenise SquarePreacher

My brother was involved in a heated debate with someone who continues to judge me. Within the course of the discussion my brother described me as a "non-partying square." My first inclination was to defend myself. I thought, "I can party with the best of them!" When I was much younger, I would have read that as a putdown and a challenge. I would have gone out and partied just to show him, and anyone else who thinks I'm square, that I can have fun like the rest of them (you)! The truth is, but for a few years in my life, I've never really been much of a partier. I've always been a very responsible, taking-care-of-others kind of person.

I admit it. I'm square. I'm square and I'm proud of it! I'm proud of the fact that I have something substantive to talk about other than how inebriated I got the other day. I'm proud of the fact that I'm the person those inebriated people seek out when they are vulnerable enough to reveal why they are self medicating. I'm proud of the fact that when I go out, I don't have to apologize to anyone the next day for the foolish things I did the night before. I'm a non-partying square and I'm proud of it.

Okay, it still sounds defensive. It sounds like I'm judging, but I don't mean to. I'm truly concerned. I've seen so many people consistently wasting their time and talent in the land of party wanting to fit in and have social acceptance. True social acceptance comes from integrity, honesty, and compassion. True self acceptance comes from realizing our value in Christ. We all, including myself, need to check ourselves when it comes to what we do for acceptance.

As SquarePastor, I love The Message's interpretation of Ephesians 5:18-19, "Don't drink too much wine. That cheapens your life. Drink the Spirit of God, huge draughts of Him. Sing hymns instead of drinking songs! Sing songs from your heart to Christ." Christ died for all of us; there is nothing cheap about us. Hallelujah!

Dear LSUCC Family and Friends,

LSUCC News...

Special Service with Rev. Denise Cordova

11:45am September 2, 2012
Join us the FIRST SUNDAY in September for a special service with our pastor, the Rev. Denise Cordova. This service promises to be a very special time you don't want to miss!

LSUCC Services Get More Intimate

LSUCC gets "unplugged"... We've moved the Praise Team down to join the congregation in a more intimate setting for our worship. Tambourines, shakers, bongos, and other instruments are passed around and everyone is encouraged to join in. We've already had some special times with this new worship format. Come on out and see!

New "LSUCC Unplugged" Recordings

We've put up the recordings of our first "unplugged" service on our website (thank you Rick Spagnola for prepping the files).

Summer Happenings...

Special Events

We had a lot of fun at this summer's events. Our numbers may not have been huge, but a great time was had by all.

In July we had a Church BBQ at Rancho San Rafael Park. Tammy, Kristin, and Mike "manned" the grill and cooked up hamburgers and hot dogs for all. Congregants brought salads and side dishes and lots of desserts. While digesting our feast we got a little competitive and played some games together. Who ever thought that Jenga could be so intense (hold your breath and don't shake the table)!

In early August we had a Church Hike to Galena Creek Falls at the top of Mt. Rose. What a beautiful day it was -- perfect for a hike. The gentle hike was an hour to the falls where we had lunch (for another hour) and then hiked back to our cars. Our small group included three dogs that kept us laughing on the trail as they chased anything moving in the bushes around us.

Reno Gay Pride was on August 18 and, as always, LSUCC had a booth at the festivities. We passed out pens and brochures about our church and spoke to many people who had never heard of us before as well as welcomed old friends we hadn't seen in a while. It was a really great day; and was made so by the many wonderful volunteers who took turns at our booth throughout the festive day. Thanks to every one of you who sat through your assigned times, in the rain, heat, and humidity. You really showed this community that Light of the Soul cares for them and for each other. God bless you all!

Thank You, Thank You...

Thanks to Our Summer Helpers

A church doesn't run all by itself. Every week there is a small army of people who come together so that we, at Light of the Soul, can have the privilege of worshiping our God, who loves us and made us just the way we are. We thank all of our greeters, acolytes, fellowshiphosts, presentation techs, sound crew, Praise Team, guest speakers, and our church Executive Council. Without all of you, we would not be able to do the work of this ministry. Indeed, there would be no ministry without your faithfulness to answer the Call of God. May you be blessed beyond measure, and may our Lord guide each of you into closer relationship with him. AMEN!

We look forward to seeing you in Services. Have a blessed Fall. Remember, at Light of the Soul United Church of Christ no matter who you are, or where you are on life's journey, you are ALWAYS welcome here.

Blessings,
LSUCC Executive Council
